Monterey Pop: California Dreamin’

Ah the sounds of Summer! And with it comes the now ubiquitous Summer Festival. Think I’m kidding? In April Rolling Stone.com published a piece on summer concerts, “Summer 2015’s 50 Must-See Music Festivals.” No matter your musical tastes there’s a Festival that caters to it.

But  once upon a time in the West, when there hadn’t even been one rock festival, suddenly, in a two week period there were two. Naturally they took place in California, in 1967, the epicenter of Youth Culture.

This upcoming week marks the 48th anniversary of The Monterey International Pop Festival (June 16-18, 1967).

Last week marked the 48th anniversary of The KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival (June 10-11, 1967) which is considered to have been America’s – if not the world’s – first rock festival.

The Magic Mountain Music Festival was primarily a regional music affair because the majority of the artists who performed

were groups that played the Fillmore and Avalon ballrooms and were part of the psychedelic rock scene at the time,

A  list of regional acts included The Sparrow, Every Mother’s Son, Kaleidoscope, The Mojo Men, Sons of Champlin, The Loading Zone and The Mystery Trend.

Performers with, a bit, more name recognition (at the time) included Dionne Warwick, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds with Hugh Masekela, The Seeds, The Grass Roots and The 5th Dimension.

Interestingly The Magic Mountain Music Festival was The Doors first large show and just happened to coincide with the rise of group’s first major hit, “Light My Fire” to the top of the charts.

 Monterey, on the other hand,

was … the first high-profile event to mix acts from major regional music centers in the U.S.A. — San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis and New York City

and

boasted a lineup that put established stars like The Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel and The Byrds alongside groundbreaking new acts from the UK and the USA.

At Monterey was American audiences first introduction to The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who and Ravi Shankar, while also introducing Otis Redding “to a large, predominantly white audience.”

Playing Monterey helped to launch the careers of Janis Joplin (Big Brother and the Holding Company), Canned Heat, Laura Nyro and Steve Miller.

In 2015 we remember Monterey, rather than Magic Mountain simply

because Monterey was widely promoted and heavily attended, featured historic performances, and was the subject of a popular theatrical documentary film…

Monterey served as both inspiration and template for future music festivals, including the Woodstock Festival two years later.

Combined both festivals were spark that helped to jumpstart 1967’s “Summer of Love.”

If you were a teenager or young adult in 1967 the “Summer of Love” were heady times, but at the time, who could have ever imagined that 1968, would be so dark.

Enjoy the music, remain in the light.

Orphans

I was in the process of packing up some books in my daughter’s old room when I came across a stack of loose CDs on a bookcase. The only way I could identify the majority of them was to go online. Interestingly she left behind several CDs that were part of 2 CD sets. Now who does that? So if you’re missing Disc 2 from Pavement’s Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe or Wowee Zowee (Sordid Sentinels Edition) I have you covered.

I’ll admit that the majority of the music posted here isn’t my cup of team but besides expanding my musical horizons it allowed me the opportunity to test both CUERipper and Asunder.

This should keep you busy for awhile.

Seasons Greetings From the Pioneer Valley

Merry Christmas from a soggy and foggy Western Massachusetts. Santa’s definitely going to have to rely on Rudolph’s red nose tonight.

When we were kids if you were naughty around Christmas timer (and of course what kid wasn’t) our parents threatened that Santa was going to leave coal in our Christmas stockings.

Now I don’t know and I don’t care if you’ve been naughty or nice (where does one find lumps of coals) so I’ll leave you with some music instead.

Fear and Loathing During the Long Hot Summer of 2013

Being forced indoors because of last week’s heat, humidity gave me an opportunity to reshelf and reorganize my CDs; while also providing a chance to listen to and rediscover some CDs I’d forgotten about. One of those forgotten CDs is the audio version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

For the book’s 25th anniversary a standout cast of “counterculture vets and latter-day hipsters,” which included Harry Stanton (narrator), filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Duke), Buck Henry (desk clerk) and Harry Shearer (police chief) was assembled to record an audio version of the book.

While the audio version is truer to the book then “Terry Gilliam’s 1998 film version with Johnny Depp,” both versions  pale in comparison to the book.

For those of you who haven’t read the book I highly recommend reading the book first (if for no reason other than Ralph Steadman’s illustrations) and then listen to the audio version.

Summer Re-runs

I don’t know where you live but it’s been HOT here in New England. I’m sure that many of you are even hotter. My condolences. When it’s HOT and the humidity levels are high enough that it would have been better to have been born with gills one is forced to stay indoors and turn up the AC, close the blinds and hunker down from the heat.

Of course it helps that summertime is also re-run time and at this time of the year there certainly enough to choose from, so whether it’s a Law & Order, NCIS, or Storage Wars marathon there’s bound be something on TV to help pass the time.

With that in mind I continue with my own version of Summer Re-runs, this time around I’ve refreshed all the links for my 2007 4 part series, Boston’s Big Boss Sounds.

Sharp eyed readers are sure to point out that curiously between Part 1 and Part 3 there no  Part 2. Not to worry, as the links for Boston’s Big Boss Sounds Part 2: The Dambuilders are still active after all these years.

So for those American readers who are part of the the 60% of Americans currently sweltering from the heat and living in a drought stricken area here’s something that just might get you to turn off that The Three Stooges marathon.

For the rest of my readers hopefully it’s a cooler where you live.

Whipping Boy

whipping boy

The Irish band Whipping Boy was Fearghal McKee (vocals, guitar) Paul Page (guitar), Myles McDonnell (bass, backing vocals) and Colm Hassett (drums). Reformed in 2011 only McKee and Hassett remain from the original band, the new members are Finn O’Connor, Killian McGowan and Joey McGowan (bass).

The bands early shows have been described as

  white-noise and strobe drenched affairs

with the audience apparently there, more often then not,  to witness frontman

 McKee’s compelling brand of insanity.

The group’s debut, 1992’s, Submarine

with its swirling guitar sounds, oblique lyrics and psychedelic fuzz

shows the influence that groups like Spaceman 3 and Sonic Youth had on the fledgling band’s sound.

By the time the group released Heartworm  they  had developed their own sound.

In issue #39 of The Big Takeover Heartworm would be #2 on editor Jack Rabid’s Top 40 list. In his review of the album he states

Light years ahead of this Irish quartet’s obscure, out-of-print debut Submarine… this sophomore LP is no “slump.” Instead, it’s filled with tense guitars, on-the-brink anxiety, guts, brains and fantastic production…

Heartworm was described by one writer

It is populated by… ‘good people fucking up and fucked up people doing their best to be good’

and both The Honeymoon Is Over and We Don’t Need Nobody Else, with their blunt references to spousal abuse make that case abundantly clear.

The tender Morning Rise and the “comic wonder of existence,” Personality serve as a counter balance to the negativity of the fore mentioned songs.

With McKee’s readiness to lay bare his soul and the band’s increasingly powerful live performances the band toured Europe with Lou Reed, but just when it seemed that the world beyond Ireland was starting to take notice the band broke up.

In 2000 a new label, Low Rent, released the eponymously titled Whipping Boy but with no tour in support  of the album nothing much came of it.

A tentative comeback in 2005 went nowhere, but in 2011  the band reform and perform at a number of events around Ireland.

This year the UK’s Rocket Girl label released a new Whipping Boy digital single, No One Takes Prisoners Anymore / Earth’s Last Picture.

The Nectarine No 9

Glasgow Scotland was host to a vibrant and thriving Indie rock scene during the 1990s, but that scene was dominated by two distinct musical styles

the winsome guitar pop of Teenage Fanclub and its many affiliated bands or the twee preciousness of Belle & Sebastian and their many affiliated bands.

Part of the scene, but also outside and looking in was  The Nectarine No. 9. Lead by Davey Henderson (guitar and vocals), Simon Smeeton (guitars/keyboards), Iain Holford (bass) and John Thompson (drums) the group formed in 1991.

Signed to the reactivated Postcard label the band and Henderson, in particular,

shared little of the naïve pop sensibility of Postcard alums like Aztec Camera or Orange Juice, instead preferring a noisy guitar rock sound mixed with Captain Beefheart-style quirkiness.

Prior to forming The Nectarine No. 9 Henderson lead “the avant-funk Fire Engines in 1980.” He later joined forces with Simon Smeeton in the 80’s pop band Win.

Their 1992 debut, A Sea With Three Stars was quickly followed by the Unloaded for You EP. In 1993 Strange Fruit released Guitar Thieves, a nine-track compilation of various BBC sessions which the band had recorded during the first half of that year. America and Canada were finally introduced to the group with the 1994 release of Niagara Falls,“ a 16-track summation of the first album and EP.”  Included on the album was one new track, “This Arsehole’s Been Burned Too Many Times Before,” which was a limited edition U.K. 7″.

The group’s long delayed second proper album, 1995’s Saint Jack, proved to more “dissonant than A Sea With Three Stars,” while also exhibiting a new found fascination with electronic noise.

After a tour with Edwyn Collins (Orange Juice) the group went on hiatus for two years, remerging in 1997 as the backing group on Scots poet Jock Scot’s album My Personal Culloden.

Released in 1998 on the Glasgow indie label Creeping Bent the curiously named Fried for Blue Material included the song “Port of Mars,” their side of a 1997 split single with Suicide singer Alan Vega.

2001’s Received Transgressed & Transmitted

is the Cliff Notes version of the history of avant-garde rock.

with nods to the lo-fi rock of the Fall and Pavement, early Flaming Lips, the technologically induced, electronic freak-out sessions of Grandaddy, and let’s not forget Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa.
