2012 Stanley Cup Champions
2012 Calder Cup Champions
Let’s hear it for those L.A. Kings! It only took 45 years, but finally The Kings are Kings.
When the Stanley Cup Playoffs playoffs began April 11th few would have predicted that the #8 seeded Kings would beat the #1 seeded Vancouver Canucks, and in 5 games no less; would sweep the #2 seeded St. Louis Blues and complete the trifecta by beating the #3 seeded Phoenix Coyotes in 5 games.
As was their habit throughout the play-offs the Kings jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in games against the #6 seeded New Jersey Devils, but were unable seal the deal on home ice in game four. They would lost game 5 back in New Jersey, but convincingly beat the Devils in game 6 back in L.A.
For the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League the wait for a championship wasn’t quite as long, only 14 years. Winners of their last 28 regular season games (their last regular season loss coming on Super Bowl Sunday to the Springfield Falcons) the Admirals marched through the playoffs, finishing with a record of 15 wins and 3 loses. Of course luck always plays a part, as the UTube clip of the fluke goal that won game three of the Calder Cup Finals serves to illustrate.
So now after 82 regular season Bruins games, the better part of 86 Stanley Cup Play-off games, and who knows how many regular season games on NBC and NBC Sports my television, commonly referred to around here as “The Hockey TV,” is taking the summer off. My wife says that it does get other channels, but when I watch the Red Sox on it the “The Hockey TV” complains that baseball is too slow.
Thank you NBC Universal (NBC, NBC Sports, CNBC and the NHL network). Your Stanley Cup promos promised Every Game, Every Night and for 62 days and 86 games you delivered and I watched.
Thanks to CBS Sports for televising games 3 & 4 of the Calder Cup Finals. You’re not noted for covering hockey but perhaps next year you can show a few more games.
And Now we return you to our regularly scheduled program, or what this blog is supposedly all about… MUSIC.
