It’s All Rock & Roll to Me – Part 2

rock n roll

I mentioned yesterday that I have days at work when I barely do more than turn on my computer, but then there are those days when I’m in front of it for 8 to 10 hours. BMFBV1D1 & BMFBV1D2 are my soundtracks for days like that.

There is a little of something here for just about every musical taste so Enjoy!

Orphans

I was in the process of packing up some books in my daughter’s old room when I came across a stack of loose CDs on a bookcase. The only way I could identify the majority of them was to go online. Interestingly she left behind several CDs that were part of 2 CD sets. Now who does that? So if you’re missing Disc 2 from Pavement’s Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe or Wowee Zowee (Sordid Sentinels Edition) I have you covered.

I’ll admit that the majority of the music posted here isn’t my cup of team but besides expanding my musical horizons it allowed me the opportunity to test both CUERipper and Asunder.

This should keep you busy for awhile.

Our Band

They were the best and brightest from Indie Rocks Class of ‘84. The Minutemen, three self-proclaimed corndogs from San Pedro, CA, the brevity of whose songs was matched by their belief in “jamming econo.” Phoenix’s The Meat Puppets, Derrick Bostrom and the Kirkwood brothers, Curt and Chris, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock. From the Twin Cities, Hüsker Dü and The Replacements. Of Bob Mould, Hüsker Dü’s frontman, the Spin Alternative Record Guide would write

The sweat pouring off fat Bob Mould’s body, as he played enough guitar for two people on his Flying V, was one of indie’s most romantic sights; every time a drop hit earth, some band like Superchunk or Soul Asylum sprang into existence.

Helping to rule indieland, along side Hüsker Dü’ were  rivals, The Replacements,

scruffy Catholic boys from Minneapolis who drank too much beer and wore too much eyeliner to fit in with the hardcore crowd, but they defined a new brat-punk sublime.

1984 saw all four groups  release albums that defined what it meant to be indie in the 80s. None of these albums, The Minutemen’s Double Nickels on the Dime, Hüsker Dü’s Zen Arcade, The Meat Puppets Meat Puppets II or The Replacements Let It Be will ever generate the sales figures of that years top three albums, Prince’s Purple Rain, Springsteen’s Born in the USA, or the best selling album of all time, Michael Jackson’s Thriller

As of 2010, the album is estimated as having sold approximately 65-110 million copies worldwide.

Released in November 1982 it

was the only album to be the best-seller of two years (1983–1984) in the US

Despite such meager sales, Double Nickels (15M in 1984), and Zen Arcade (20M by Spring 1985) proved  there existed a market for indie music, but it would take the unexpected success of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in 1991 for people to realize how big that audience actually was.

A record’s meager sales may be of concern to a record label ex, but are of little concern to music critics and rock historians, and it because of the them, not the bean-counters, that these records place in rock history are secure.

The album was performed live in its entirety at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival as part of the ATP Don’t Look Back season.

In the process of preparing this post I’ve come across several things that relate to it and maybe of interest.

NPR’s Our Concert Could Be Your Life

In the decade since its publication, Michael Azerrad’s book Our Band Could Be Your Life has taken on a sort of biblical quality among fans of independent music. So it’s no surprise that this concert — 14 current bands performing the songs of 13 icons of indie rock at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan — occasionally felt like church.

This coming December at UK 2011 ATP Curated by Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) george hurley and mike watt of the minutemen are doing songs they did when they were w/d. boon from 1980 to 1985.

Lastly, and though a bit late, the Chicago area band Econoline performed the Minutemen’s Double Nickels in it’s entirety. For those readers in the Chicago area you might want to watch out for this band, because you never know, they could repeat their performance.

The Clean: Tell Them Raoul Sent You

the clean

In their original incarnation The Clean’s essential output consisted of two EPs; the five- track Boodle Boodle Boodle and the seven-track Great Sounds, but the group’s influence on New Zealand’s post-punk rock scene cannot be simply measured by their relatively modest sales.

The Clean formed in town of Dunedin in 1978 when brothers Hamish (drums) and David (guitar) Kilgour recruited David’s school friend, guitarist Peter Gutteridge. It wouldn’t take long before they found themselves opening for the New Zealand punk rock group Enemy.

In 1979 the Kilgours decided to relocate the band to Auckland, but by then Peter Gutteridge had already left the band so while in Auckland the band performed using a revolving group of bassists. David eventually quit and returned to Dunedin where he was introduced to and started playing with bassist Robert Scott. Hamish upon learning of this new musical relationship moved back to Dunedin and  reformed The Clean.

The group’s debut single, 1981’s "Tally Ho!", was the first release of Clean fan Roger Shepherd’s fledgling Flying Nun Records. Recorded for $50.00, "Tally Ho!" with it’s jagged guitar and the melody tapped out on a Farfisa organ by 16-year old Martin Phillips of the Chills would reach #19 on New Zealand’s pop charts.

Produced by the Tall Dwarf’s Chris Knox the music on Boodle Boodle Boodle and Great Sounds are

short sharp shots of super-shambolic, super-perky garage-pop that’s deceptive in its simplicity. From the groovy organ swing of "Beatnik" to the loping "Anything Could Happen" and the lengthier drone of "Point That Thing Somewhere Else," Clean songs were exercises in unbridled minimalism and maximum impact.

Boodle Boodle Boodle surprised everyone by reaching number four on the New Zealand charts, and while both these EPs managed to capture the group’s quirky sound, it was only the 1982 single "Getting Older" which managed to approximate the band’s “roaring live sound.”

Following the release of "Getting Older" David Kilgour left the the band and returned to Dunedin. Robert Scott followed shortly afterwards, forming his own band, the Bats. Hamish Kilgour moved to Christchurch, the headquarters of Flying Nun Records, bought himself a four-track and began writing and recording. David eventually joined his brother in Christchurch where he helped his brother finish up the solo tracks and record some Clean songs. With it’s folkier and more acoustic sound the resulting album, Clean Out of Our Minds, which was credited to the Great Unwashed, marked a departure from the Clean’s punk inspired sound.

To support Clean Out of Our Minds the Kilgours reunited with original Clean guitarist Peter Gutteridge and added bassist Ross Humphries so that David Kilgour and Gutteridge could both play guitar. This line-up would record and release an EP called Singles, which earned quite a bit of airplay, as well as record sales. Within a year this line-up broke up. Hamish  went onto to form Bailter Space with guitarist Alister Parker, his brother Dave retired from music for a few years while Gutteridge started the group Snapper.

In 1988 the Robert Scott line-up reunited for two shows at the Fulham Greyhound in London. Tracks recorded at those shows were released in 1989 on the In-a-Live EP which featured

five of the band’s best old songs: "Fish," "Anything Could Happen," "Flowers," "Point That Thing Somewhere Else," "Whatever I Do Is Right."

Encouraged by the results and given a boost thanks to both the Homestead reissue of Compilation, and the efforts of fellow Kiwi bands, the Chills, the Tall Dwarfs and the Verlaines, the Clean embarked on a world tour.

Following the tour the group recorded technically its first album, Vehicle. More straightforward and pop-oriented than their previous records the album delights with songs like

"Draw(in)g to a (W)hole," "Dunes," "Big Cat" and "Diamond Shine" [which] would all be candidates for the best little singles in the world if they came in 7-inch form; [while] songs like "Home" and "I Can See" are gorgeously shimmering ballads.

Released in the spring of 1990 the band supported Vehicle with another world tour, but following the tour they promptly split up once again. Robert Scott went back to the Bats, David Kilgour formed Stephen while Hamish moved to New York, where he and his wife formed the Mad Scene.

1994s Modern Rock, with it’s nod to the Velvet Underground, Nick Drake and perhaps Stereolab, was recorded with little fanfare, as basically Hamish, David and Robert found themselves in Dunedin at the same time.

Unknown Country was released in 1996, while Getaway, released on Merge Records in 2001, came and went, unnoticed. Anthology is the definitive Clean collection and is the perfect place for those unfamiliar with this band to get better acquainted with it.

Guitarist Roy Montgomery and guitarist Chris Heaphy formed the duo Dissolve in 1993 after Montgomery’s former band, Dunedin, New Zealand’s Dadamah broke-up.

The majority of the duo’s debut release, That Is…Is (Not), was recorded during July of 1993 with some last minute recording and final mixing taking place early in 1994.

In an interview with Your Flesh following the release of That Is…Is (Not) Montgomery said about the album;

we wanted to try something that just involved guitars and which was more soundscape than song-oriented.  We tried to keep things simple and most of what you hear is relatively unadorned -  first takes, for better or worse.

On That Is…Is (Not) while Montgomery and Heaphy explore skeletal guitar structures… the album’s overall sound is one of

sparse picking over chords, subtle echoes and drones, fizzy feedback interludes, odd but not unpleasant tunings – in hopes of provoking emotional and contemplative states…

That Is…Is (Not) also features the clipped, dry, abbreviated vocals of Montgomery on “Strand,” "Dissong," and "Blurred." It wouldn’t be until his 1999 collaboration with Heaphy on True that Montgomery would again find his singing voice.

Dissolves’ sophomore release, 1997’s Third Album For The Sun, featuring contributions from bassist Arnie Van Bussel, Terminals drummer John Christoffels, and vocals from The Bats Kaye Woodward

shows a marked maturation in the pair’s tandem playing style and musical creativity with the overall sound of Third Album For The Sun… much more tuneful and lush than That That Is… Is (Not).

Credited to Roy Montgomery/Chris Heaphy 1999’s True

is a hypnotic, reverberating mix of solo guitar pieces and duets… an atmospheric, filmic set reminiscent of Ry Cooder’s  Paris, Texas… or Neil Young’s dark, distorted Dead Man soundtrack.

Active as a solo act, Montgomery has collaborated with the UK’s Flying Saucer Attack and with Philadelphia’s Bardo Pond released several albums under the name Hash Jar Tempo.
