It’s All Rock & Roll to Me – Part 2

rock n roll

I mentioned yesterday that I have days at work when I barely do more than turn on my computer, but then there are those days when I’m in front of it for 8 to 10 hours. BMFBV1D1 & BMFBV1D2 are my soundtracks for days like that.

There is a little of something here for just about every musical taste so Enjoy!

Black Friday

It’s just before 8:00 am here on the snowy East Coast this Friday after Thanksgiving. By now some people have probably finished their Christmas shopping and I haven’t even begun my Christmas list. For myself, I’m staying home and avoiding the marauding hordes at the mall.

The real reason for this post… earlier this week I refreshed the links to my 2007 post about the Britpop band the Boo radleys which can be found here.

Now for that second cup of coffee!

Boo! Forever

Wake Up!

Dream Pop From the Great White North: A Northern Chorus

Canadian dream-pop band A Northern Chorus was formed in 1999 by guitarists/vocalists Stu Livingstone and  Pete Hall following the break-up of their previous group Datura Dream Defered.

For over a year they performed as a duo, during which time they also began composing and performing their own original songs.

In 2000 the band add two new members, bassist Mark Raymond and drummer Dan Jagt, but it was the 2001 addition of violinist Erin Aurich to the band

which proved to be the missing piece for the band’s conceptual work.

Following the release of their debut disc, 2001’s Before We All Go to Pieces, the band went on an extended Canadian and U.S. tour.

With the tour behind them, and a new rhythm section, percussionist Marshall Bureau and bassist Owen Davies in place, the band began recording their next album, 2003’s Spirit Flags at Mount Fairview Sound in Dundas, Ontario. Rounding out the group for this album were flautist Julie MacDonald, and Sarah MacGregor on violin and violo.

By the time that the band released 2005’s  Bitter Hands Resign the band had gone through another lineup change with the additions of Alex McMaster, (cello) and percussionist Steve Hesselink.

Bitter Hands Resign

melds the extended pieces and touching vocals of Sigur Rós with the emotional rock of Appleseed Cast’s Two Conversations

Influential Pitchfork Media said of Bitter Hands Resign

A Northern Chorus has turned out the record that Death Cab for Cutie might make after taking an on online classical composition course and a near-fatal overdose of tranquilizer cocktails.

Released in 2007, The millions too many, marked the return of violinist Erin Aurich and the addition of drummer Craig Halliday and also featured the one-man-horn-section, Ben Bowen.

With it’s faster tempos and shorter songs,

seven of nine songs clocking in around four minutes

The millions too many is

hushed, artsy, and smart.

A number of the album’s songs resemble those by

similar Canadian bands like Arcade Fire and Rheostatics

but it’s on the album’s center piece, the dramatic, slow building “The Canadian Shield,” where the band resembles

the Canadian equivalent of Sigur Rós.

The Telescopes: I Can See For Miles

the telescopes

In thrall to noise and My Bloody Valentine the dream pop band, The Telescopes, formed in Burton-on-Trent, England, in 1986. The original line-up consisted of singers/guitarists Stephen Lawrie and Jo Doran, lead guitarist David Fitzgerald, bassist Robert Brookes, and drummer Dominic Dillon.

The group’s first single, 1988’s, “Forever Close Your Eyes”, was a split flexidisc with space rock pioneers Loop and was issued by Cheree Records in honor of the two groups’ joint New Year’s Eve performance.

1989 was their breakout year. Their debut single, “Kick the Wall” with it’s feedback-laden trance-rock had critics comparing them to the Jesus and Mary Chain and Spacemen 3. In the spring Cheree Records released the single, 7th# Disaster, while summer saw the release of the single “The Perfect Needle” on the American indie label What Goes On. They closed out the year with the release of Taste, their debut full-length.

Following the bankruptcy of the label What Goes On the Telescopes signed with Alan McGee’s Creation label,

where the white noise assault of their early releases gave way to a more ethereal, textured approach.

1991’s Celeste was the first release that showcased their new sound, later that year the gorgeous Flying would reach #79 on the U.K. pop charts. All of which paved the way for their landmark first Creation LP, officially known as Untitled (The Telescopes).

Moody and introspective, the album, produced by Guy Fixsen (Moose & Rollerskate Skinny), with it’s

shimmering guitars, sinuous basslines, and soulful rhythms… garnished with bongos, organs, pianos and all sort of classic instruments… (and) songs with melodies and hooks reminiscent of Love or The Notorious Byrds Brothers-era Byrds

remains a classic of the shoegazer era.

The album’s success would prove the Telescope’s undoing, but the classic sound that they came up with stills lives on in the music of bands like Mojave 3 and the Verve.

Citing creative differences the Telescopes broke-up in 1994.

In 1996 Lawrie and Doran reunited and formed the group Unisex, which also included Nick Hemming (Guitars/Keyboards), Dan (Drums) and Foz (Bass). In 1997 the band released a split single, “TV Cowboy” with Good Morning Canada. They also released an EP, Deadlock, and a full-length, Stratosfear on U.S. indie label Double Agent.

Lawrie and Doran revived the Telescopes’ name for 2002’s Third Wave.

Moose

moose

Formed in early 1990 by the songwriting team of Kevin (K.J.) McKillop and Russell Yates, bassist Jeremy Tishler and drummer Damien Warburton the fledgling group Moose was caught in concert by a writer from Sounds who in his review noted that

singer Russell Yates read lyrics taped to the floor throughout the gig.

Described by the journalist as “Shoegazing” the term was picked up by NME

who used it as a reference to the tendency of the bands’ guitarists to stare at their feet—or their effects pedals; seemingly deep in concentration, while playing,

while the regular British press picked up the term and applied it to just about any band who played

shatteringly loud, droning neo-psychedelia (music).

Signed to Hut Records in 1990 (the British home of the Smashing Pumpkins and the Verve) the group quickly recorded three EPs with Guy Fixsen (later of Laika).

Not only did 1991 see Moose release three EPs it also saw Warburton and Tishler leaving the band. They would be replaced by drummer Richard Thomas, bassist Lincoln Fong and his brother Russell on guitar.

1991 found Hut allying themselves with Virgin Records, who condensed the group’s earlier material onto the seven-track EP, Sonny and Sam (the group’s only major-label US release).

On … XYZ,  their Mitch Easter (R.E.M, Let’s Activate) produced debut full-length Moose abandons

the hazy guitar effects experimentation of their first three EPs… embracing a clean, acoustic-based style — inspired by ’60s icons Burt Bacharach and Tim Buckley as well as jangle merchants like the Byrds and R.E.M.

The album’s leadoff single “Little Bird” and “The Whistling Song” are acoustic pop songs, with effects providing some texture. “I’ll See You In My Dreams” is a French-pop-ish waltz, while “Soon Is Never Soon Enough” features a chugging rhythm, a hint of Jerry Lee Lewis on piano and Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries on harmony vocals. Even Harry Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talking”  is in for a bit of Moose’s jangly/shoegazing treatment.

Poor sales of …XYZ lead to Hut dropping the band in 1993. Undaunted Moose released the Liquid Make Up EP on their own Cool Badge label. The EPs lead track, “I Wanted to See You to See if I Wanted You,” was a charming piece of pop, and proved to be their best single to that date.

Signing with Belgium’s Play It Again Sam Records Moose released their second full-length, Honey Bee, in early 1994. It included a different version of “I Wanted to See You to See if I Wanted You”. Milking a sure thing, The Bang Bang EP, released several months later, included a carbon-copy version of “I Wanted to See You to See if I Wanted You”.

1996’s Live a Little, Love a Lot, finds Moose performing

a variation of classic pop that any fan of the Byrds or Lee Hazlewood… can appreciate.

Except for the peppy opening song, “Play God”, (featuring the Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser) and the lively, “Rubdown”, Live a Little, Love a Lot is essentially “11 breezy acoustic pop songs.”

After a four year sabbatical Moose returned with High Ball Me! in 2000. As they had beginning with 1992’s …XYZ Moose continues to work the fertile fields of

classic 60s / 70s pop, heart shredding country & western, stellar songwriting (of the Nillson / Hazelwood school)

Described by one critic as

the greatest record the House of Love never managed to make despite always threatening to

“High Ball Me” is 11 tracks

of sweeping strings, shimmering guitars, rousing organs, rattling bongos, Joe Meek-esque antique effects.

Spirea X

Spirea X

Named after an early Primal Scream b-side and lead by ex-Primal Scream member Jim Beattie Spirea X was a short lived dream pop/noise pop act on 4AD. Along with Judith Boyle (vocals) and Andy Kerr (drums) the group released two singles, “Chlorine Dream” (a lovely piece of 60s guitar pop) and “Speed Reaction” plus the full length Fireblade Skies in 1991. At the time of its release, Fireblade Skies, with its combination of sweet vocal melodies and alternately noisy and blurry bursts of guitars and dance beats was the then-current sound of the U.K., but the album failed to catch on with both consumers and the notoriously cynical English music press.

Spirea X vanished without a trace. Beattie, Boyle and former Spirea X manager Simon Dine would go onto form the group Adventures in Stereo.

You Are a Vapour Trail: Ride

A belated Happy New Years to everyone.

I admit, I have been missing in action. As anyone who lives in New England or the north-east can attest January 2011 has been a month of one large snow storm after another. And let’s not forget the occasional snow sleet and freezing rain storm to liven things up. One’s daily routine now consists of shoveling snow, work, and combing home from work to shovel more snow or chop ice. It all leaves one with just about enough energy to watch TV.

The English group Ride (guitarist/vocalist Andy Bell, vocalist/guitarist Mark Gardener, bassist Stephan Queralt, and drummer Loz Colbert) formed in Oxfordshire, England, in 1988. Their sound married the massive, trembling, distorted wall of My Bloody Valentine with a

simpler, more direct melodic approach.

Part of England’s shoegazing movement (so dubbed  by the British musical press because band members stared at their feet while performing) Ride

with their keen sense songcraft and dynamics … for a while was proclaimed the last great hope of British rock

Signing with Creation Records in 1989 the group released it’s self-tilted EP later that year. With the original, "Chelsea Girl" and three other long noise-pop creations, the EP was praised by the critics, and even managed to make the U.K charts.

With it’s harder edged sound, Ride’s second EP, Play, entered the U.K. Top 40 when it was released in the spring of 1990. Both EPs were later combined as the eight song Smile, which would be America’s introduction to the group.

Nowhere, the band’s first album, was released at the end of 1990. With it’s mix of

delicious shoegaze-guitar-fuzz-echo

and songs like

the ambling "Dreams Burn Down," the magnificent "Vapour Trail" and "Taste"

it was a significant hit, peaking at number 14 on the U.K. charts.

"Leave Them All Behind", the first single off 1992’s  Going Blank Again was a top ten U.K single, but it’s success and the album’s other strong songs; “Leave Them All Behind," "Time of Her Time" and "Cool Your Boots," simply weren’t enough to create an increased audience for the band’s music. A less then successful American tour that followed the album’s release created so such tension within the band, especially between Bell and Gardener, that the band took an extended hiatus.

Two years after the frustrations generated by the lack of  breakthrough success forced the band to take an extended break from themselves Ride re-emerged with their third album, Carnival of Light.

Carnival of Light was a major musical shift for the group. They abandoned their signature sound of

shatteringly loud, droning neo-psychedelia

for more conventional psychedelic rock, ending

Ride’s reliance on guitar textures, relegating deep-pile sensuality to a part- time hobby via Bell’s keyboard competence.

Tarantula, Ride’s fourth album was recorded during the summer of 1995. Tensions between Bell and Gardener escalated to the point that both quit the band shortly after recording was finished in August 1995. Even with that Tarantula was

just the kind of direct, unpretentious and easily likable guitar-pop album it always needed to make… and winds up sounding like a young Teenage Fanclub with more ideas and a different accent.

In January 1996 the band announced their break-up, Tarantula would be released two months later, in March 1996.
