In News You Missed This Week

In News You Missed This Week

To celebrate Bikini Kill frontwoman and key figure in the riot grrrl movement, Kathleen Hanna’s recent performance at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre Boston Mayor Marty Walsh proclaimed that April 9, 2015 is now officially “Riot Grrrl Day” in Boston.

The full text of his proclamation:

The riot grrrl philosophy has never felt more relevant, with misogyny still rampant in many cultural spaces;” and “Riot grrrls redefine the language used against them and continue to fight the newest incarnations of patriarchy. In doing so, they ironically confirm one ex-congressman’s accidental wisdom: ‘the female body has ways to try to shut that down.’ It sure does: women’s voices telling their stories can shut that down.”

While Punk had been popular since the mid 1970’s by the late 1980’s it hadn’t, as yet, produced a popular female fronted group… but that was about to change.

The beginning of the ‘90s saw most of the music world’s attention beginning to focus on Seattle’s burgeoning music scene but an hour south of Seattle in Olympia WA, and centered around Evergreen College, another music scene was beginning to take shape.

Overshadowed by Seattle, but no less noisy, this music scene was built by, built for, and built around Women, their bands and a sub-genre of Punk dubbed Riot Grrrl.

Riot grrrls weren’t afraid of volume, impoliteness and the hounds of political correctness. They had a message, and they wanted to say it as loud as possible.

In 1991 the riot grrrl manifesto was published in the pages of BIKINI KILL ZINE 2.

Two of the seminal riot grrrl groups were Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. Started in 1991 by University of Oregon students Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman Bratmobile would break-up publicly on stage in 1994, reform in 1998 and break-up again in 2003.

Bikini Kill formed in Olympia, WA, in 1990 with Kathleen Hanna (vocals), Billy Karren (guitar), Kathi Wilcox (bass) and Tobi Vail (drums).

Noted for their fiery live performances and notorious for its radical feminist lyrics the band while occasionally

collaborating with high-profile acts such as Nirvana and Joan Jett

was better known for shunning both the major record labels and the mainstream rock press. In 1997 after releasing two full length albums, several EPs and two compilations the band called it quits. Hanna would then go on to produce the lo-fi solo project The Julie Ruin and the band Le Tigre.

In 2015 riot grrrl bands and their philosophy don’t receive the kind of press coverage that they received 25 years ago but

The riot grrrl philosophy, aesthetic and legacy continues to influence art today including a slew of new female punk projects like The Barbazons, Slutever and others.

Seasons Greetings From the Pioneer Valley

Merry Christmas from a soggy and foggy Western Massachusetts. Santa’s definitely going to have to rely on Rudolph’s red nose tonight.

When we were kids if you were naughty around Christmas timer (and of course what kid wasn’t) our parents threatened that Santa was going to leave coal in our Christmas stockings.

Now I don’t know and I don’t care if you’ve been naughty or nice (where does one find lumps of coals) so I’ll leave you with some music instead.

Black Friday

It’s just before 8:00 am here on the snowy East Coast this Friday after Thanksgiving. By now some people have probably finished their Christmas shopping and I haven’t even begun my Christmas list. For myself, I’m staying home and avoiding the marauding hordes at the mall.

The real reason for this post… earlier this week I refreshed the links to my 2007 post about the Britpop band the Boo radleys which can be found here.

Now for that second cup of coffee!

Bedhead Get a Box Set

Ah! Tis’ the season, a season marked by the arrival of the box set, the deluxe reissue and the multi-disc release and this year is no exception.

There are deluxe reissues of Led Zeppelin’s first five albums, all seven of Sleater-Kinney’s CDs on vinyl, a 40th anniversary box set for “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” multi-disc releases from both David Bowie and Joni Mitchell, and not one, but two, multi-disc releases from Wilco and (the alleged) last release ever from the elder statesman of British Art-rock, Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine, Matching Mole).

However, this holiday season’s most interesting and most unexpected box set has to be the one devoted to Texas slow core pioneers Bedhead.

Bedhead 1992 – 1998 encompasses the group’s

complete studio recordings… Every cymbal crash, guitar brush, and whisper, across five LPs or four compact discs. Deluxe box includes WhatFunLifeWas, Beheaded, Transaction De Novo, and an additional disc overflowing with singles, EPs, and outtakes, alongside a perfect bound book dissecting the quintet’s nervous slouch through the ’90s

I originally wrote about Bedhead in 2006 and at that time the thought that this semi-obscure 90’s band merited a box set never crossed my mind. Well the good folks at Numero Group thought differently.

So if you are giving the “Gift of Music” this Christmas Bedhead 1992 – 1998 could be the perfect gift for that discerning or difficult “record” collector on your list. It also makes a perfect gift for yourself.

Undecided… the links on my original 2006 post  have been refreshed.

One Off

Vowel Movement was a one off collaboration between new wave/punk artist Holly Vincent (Holly & the Italians, the Oblivious) and Concrete Blonde’s Johnette Napolitano.

Low-key and lo-fi the album provided a chance for the duo to return to their punk roots, but that very lo-finess accounts, in part, for the fact that some tracks, musically or lyrically, have a certain unfinished feel to them.

Sometimes the sum is not greater than the parts and Vowel Movement is case in point, and while Individually their work outshines their collaborative effort this album warrants a listen.

In Heavy Rotation

Talk about falling into a rut! For the last month, whether because of laziness, or maybe I thought that they’d provide the answers to the secrets of the Universe, these three albums, Dawnrazor, The Essential Radio Birdman and Crickets And Fireflies were my constant musical companions on my daily walk.

No matter how you like your music, the straight with chaser punk and rock n’ roll of Radio Birdman, the throat shredding Goth of Fields of the Nephilim or the psychedelic noodling of Kinski, Paik and Surface Of Eceyon this post likely has something to suit your musical tastes.
