All things are One: Mo Boma

Truly a world music group, Mo Boma (named after a pygmy girl’s lullaby) is comprised of percussionist/guitarist Carsten Tiedemann (Germany), bassist Skuli Sverrisson (Iceland) and synthesist Jamshied  Sharifi (Topeka, Kansas), all of them having attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

The foundation upon which Mo Boma’s sound rests are

Tiedemann’s studies in classical composition structures and ethnic music traditions (and) Sverrisson’s own experience as a jazz bassist and improvisational musician.

Described by one reviewer as “very cool camel music,” Mo Boma’s debut album, 1992’s Jijimuge, is a fusion of wide ranging percussive rhythms, Caribbean, African and Arabic, along

with some of the softer aspects of jazz and rock,

Tiedemann’s rapid acoustic leads and fuzzed rhythms, Sverrisson’s fretless bass and Sharifi’s richly blurred synth textures.
