“Love Will Tear Us Apart”

When routine bites hard

And ambitions are low.

And resentment rides high

But emotions won’t grow.

And we’re changing our ways

Taking different roads.

Then love will tear us apart again.

Why is the bedroom so cold

You’ve turned away on your side

Is my timing that flawed?

Our respect run so dry

Yet there’s still this appeal

That we’ve kept through our lives.

But love will tear us apart again.

You cry out in your sleep,

All my failings exposed

Gets a taste in my mouth

As desperation takes hold.

Is it something so good

Just can’t function no more

When love will tear us apart again.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching thirty-six versions of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” might be just enough to give oneself pause before pursuing that “special someone.”

Written in August and September of 1979 “Love Will Tear Us Apart” debuted later that year when Joy Division supported the Buzzcocks on their UK tour. The song reflects both the problems in lead singer Ian Curtis’s marriage, and his general state of mind just prior to his May 1980 suicide.

Released shortly after his death the song became the band’s first chart hit, reaching number 13 in the UK. In 1981 it would debut at number one in New Zealand.

Certainly one of rocks more covered song “Love Will Tear Us Apart”

was listed by NME magazine as the best single of all time in 2002… by Rolling Stone magazine at number 179 in its top 500 songs of all time. In May 2007, NME placed it at number 19 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems.

Besides these thirty-six cover versions the song has also been covered by: P.J. Proby, Mark Owen, Nerina Pallot, Heavens, Red Mecca, REVERE, Chris Edwards, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra , The Blood Divine, Oysterband with June Tabor, Jamie Cullum, Evelyn Evelyn, Saint Saviour , Broken Social Scene, Gavin Rossdale and Mísia .

For the record, I’m partial to Calexico’s version.

  2. I’ve got to disagree with you about Calexico’s version. While I love Calexico – whether live or on disc – I think their version is too positive and upbeat. I think it’s a really bleak, depressing song. Broken Social Scene’s version is much more in keeping with the magnificent original. It fits brilliantly in the movie of The Time Traveler’s Wife, by the way, which I thought was extraordinarily good, given Hollywood’s penchant for destroying great books. Still, a great post though.

    • With 36 versions of this song to chose from there’s certainly something for every taste. It’s the instrumental aspects of Calexico’s version that drew me in. Maybe it does sound a bit positive, but at the end of the day if your marriage was falling apart wouldn’t you like some glimmer of hope that perhaps it could be saved?

Haven’t seen The Time Traveler’s Wife but have to agree with your assessment about Hollywood “penchant for destroying great books.”
