The Bolshoi

The Bolshoi

Proto-goth band, The Bolshoi, formed in Bath in 1984. Originally consisting of Trevor Tanner (vocals and guitars), Nick Chown (bass) and Jan Kalicki (drums) the trios early gigs were in support of groups like The Cult, The March Violets, and Lords of the New Church. Their debut single “Sob Story” was released in 1985 and was soon followed by the Giants ep. Moving to London that same year the group added keyboardist Paul Clark. Their debut full length Friends was released in 1986 and in support of it they toured the U.S., South America, and Poland. The pop-oriented Lindy’s Party was released in 1987, but problems with the management of Beggars Banquet halted the release of 1988’s Country Life.

Often considered as a cross between early versions of The Cult and U2, stylistically they were similar to fellow Beggars Banquet label mates, Bauhaus. Tanner, who still continues to record,

“was recognized for his dark, pensive lyrics that belied a social responsibility and awareness”,

most notably on songs like “Sunday Morning”, “Books on the Bonfire” and “T.V. Man.”
