Gimme Indie Rock

Buy This Used Compact Disc – A Dutch East India Sampler is essentially a middle finger salute to the record industry. A collection of new music but sold for the price of a used cd it was released in reaction to the major record labels insistence that stores selling used cds were killing the music business.

“This, of course, was after home taping killed the music industry but before Napster killed the music industry”.

Released by Dutch East India Trading, at that time the largest independent record distributor in the U.S., this sampler of artists on DEIT controlled labels provides a snap shot of the state of alternative rock circa 1993. In that post “Nevermind” era the hard rock of Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains was being marketed as “alternative”, while the real “alternative” scene was just trying to figure what to do next. Several paths that alternative music would eventually take are previewed here; lo-fi (New Radiant Storm King, Sebadoh), alt-country (Uncle Tupelo, Chuck Prophet), emo (Sister Double Happiness) and indie-pop (Unrest).

With a list price of $2.98 1996’s Grass of ’96 was a fine introduction to Grass’ 1996 artist roster. While not everything is great the album does provide an interesting overview of mid-’90s alternative and post-grunge rock.
