Maybe It Was the Water!

What was it about the Washington D.C. area that fostered so many good punk and indie acts in the late 1980s and mid 1990s? Besides the bands, the area was home to three highly respected indie / punk labels, Simple Machines, Discord and TeenBeat . It certainly wasn’t the water… or was it?

Formed in Arlington, VA. in 1990 the Jenny Toomey fronted Tsunami was among the most important Tsunamiand original bands to emerge from the American indie scene of the 1990s. Their sociopolitical activism and commitment to D.I.Y principals; plus being the driving force behind the Simple Machines record label earned them the respect of the alternative community.

The Simple Machines record label was started by Tsunami frontwoman Jenny Toomey and guitarist Kristin Thomson as a result of their frustration with record industry machinations.
