The Intro & The Outro

These two compilations mark the beginnings and the ending of the great Northwest music explosion of the early to mid 1990’s. Before Nirvana and Seattle there was Olympia, Washington and The International Underground Pop Convention, show casing both local and national indie artists; artists that for the most part were flying under the radar of both mainstream audiences and the major record labels.

Within a year Nirvana would become a mainstream success, Seattle would would become the next big scene, and indie rock would be co-oped by the major record labels and become alternative rock.

While both cds contain music from groups that would become stars, it’s the “lesser lights” that really shine here, groups that for the most part would remain local favorites.

An article published in the “Seattle Weekly “, http://www.seattleweekly.com/music/0132/music-nelson.php ,provides a good account of how the International Pop Underground Convention came to be, as well as, a general overview of indie rock in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990’s.
