A Tribute to The Minutemen & Pink Floyd

Talk about “The Odd Couple”, The Minutemen and Pink Floyd.

The Minutemen, three “corndogs from Pedro, “jammin’ econo”. Their best selling record 1984’s ” Double Nickels on the Dime” never charted, and to date has sold about 500, 000 copies. Pink Floyd… the group that put the “space” in Space Rock, the “psyche” in psychedelic. Their best selling album, “Dark Side of the Moon ” remained in the Billboard Top 200 albums for 741 consecutive weeks, (The Dark Side of the Moon ), and still sells 9600 copies a week in the US. With their success they certainly didn’t jam “econo.”

As different as they both might seem they do have something in common. Both groups served as a bridge from one form of rock to another. Pink Floyd helped to move rock from it’s blues based “Rock & Roll” roots to a rock that would begin to incorporate electronics as more than mere novelty. The Minutemen, with their blend of rock, jazz, funk and a sense of humor served as the bridge from hard core punk to the “softer” punk of mid 1980’s college radio. Lastly, both groups served as the musical linchpin for the scores of groups that attempted to emulate them.
